Lydia’s breast cancer story:
Lydia was just 28 when she was diagnosed with Her2+ grade 3 breast cancer, that had spread to her lymph nodes. She found a lump 2 weeks prior to her breast cancer diagnosis saying ‘people may think you’re crazy to think this but I instantly knew it was cancer’.
She started 8 rounds (7 months) of chemotherapy in May 2023. In December she had a single mastectomy and full axillary lymph node clearance. When diagnosed she had 2 cancerous lumps, 40mm of tumours but after chemotherapy only 3mm remained – which was amazing news!
‘As I’m not yet in remission, I started chemotherapy again on Valentine’s Day for 10 months. And radiotherapy on the 26th February, 15 sessions for 3 weeks! I pray by the end of this year I’m told I’m in remission!’
More about Lydia:
‘I’m a young single Mum, fighting my way through this craziness with two beautiful children aged 3 and 5. They get me through each day! Their strength through all of this inspires me. They’ve watched their mummy loose all her hair, be so poorly, we’ve spent days apart for the first time when I’ve been unwell in hospital and they never complain. They’re the happiest, kindest souls. They openly talk about breast cancer and everything going on. I hope as they grow up they carry on doing so and help me as I put my all in to raising awareness for breast cancer!
I unfortunately can’t work at the moment due to having so much treatment and the nature of my job. I’ve worked in the same nursery for 13 years. I primarily supported children with special educational needs. It was crazy this came along and tipped life upside down. I do always get praised on my positivity through the madness though often being told “you’ll get through it, you’re Lydia”. I do believe you can pluck motivation and happiness from the littlest things!
We’re fortunate to have the best friends and family around us too! I absolutely love music, all music! The kids and I are always cooking or baking with the music blasting! We enjoy spending time with family, day trips, picnics, park trips and our favourite food has to be Jamaican food.
My oncologist also told me amazing news that a trip abroad is possible through this next load of treatment! So we’re hoping to get passports this year and go for our first family holiday abroad! And as I’ll also be turning 30 in the summer, this is so exciting for us!’
