This week is Dying Matters Awareness Week (5-11th May)

It is an important week because it encourages open and honest conversations about death, dying, and grief, breaking down taboos and empowering individuals to plan for their end-of-life care and make informed decisions. Organised by @hospice_uk it aims to create a culture where discussing death and dying is as natural as discussing other important life events.

This year’s campaign theme, ‘The Culture of Dying Matters,’ delves into the diverse ways communities across the UK discuss, navigate, and commemorate death and dying while emphasising the shared emotions that connect us all in grief and loss.

Talking about death and dying is not easy, but this year, @hospice_uk is focusing on the diverse cultural approaches to death and dying within the UK and how these perspectives can inspire more open and meaningful discussions in every community. By sharing and learning from these experiences, Hospice UK wants to create a society where talking about death is less of a taboo and one where everyone feels empowered to have these conversations.

Exciting news! 📣 Our Little Lifts Retreat for people living with secondary breast cancer is back for 2025

💕 11th - 13th November
💕 Sedgeford Hall Estate, Sedgeford, PE36 5LT

This retreat was launched with the amazing support of Laura Middleton-Hughes, our Ambassador and is for people who received a Little Lifts Box during secondary breast cancer treatment, anywhere in the UK.

There will be a range of wellness activities across the weekend, and it is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others affected by secondary breast cancer.

Due to limited spaces we will accept entries until the 25th of August and do a random draw, people who are successful in the draw will be notified via email.

Little Lifts was invited to Buckingham Palace 🥰 We are so proud to have been invited to attend a special reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by The King and Queen to celebrate community-based initiatives raising awareness about cancer and supporting those affected by cancer.

It was an honour for our Founder, Oa, to attend alongside Kay (Finance and Business Support Manager who has been with Little Lifts since the start), Trustee Jill (who received her Box in 2018 and has helped develop our Little Kindness Fund), and Jenny (who was there on behalf of our outstanding Corporate Partner, Sinclair, who does so much for us). The four of us attended on behalf of our most special Little Lifts Community, and you were with us in spirit 💕

Thank you to @theroyalfamily for inviting us. The evening was filled with kindness and appreciation for all the great work of so many people and organisations working hard to support the cancer community; it was truly inspiring! 💕

Here’s our Little Lifts team reminding you to feel it on the first! 💕

Today we began our Step into May challenge raising awareness around Little Lifts HQ, dressed as giant boobs!

Our team took on a 10 mile walk, joining our other fundraisers taking on our virtual challenge across the UK.

It’s simple - walk or run a marathon in May your way... do it over the month, a few days or in one go. Raise £50 and help us make a difference to people affected by breast cancer.

Here's to our superstar marathon runners 🤩 You are INCREDIBLE! Please join us in saying a huge well done to amazing Louis & Lucy and Natalie for supporting our small but mighty charity and for taking on this huge challenge.

26.2 miles completed and over £10,000 raised! We are so inspired by their dedication, kindness, and determination.

We cannot thank them enough! Here's why they chose to support Little Lifts:

Louis says: 'It’s been an honour to raise funds for you guys. To be able to help give a little back to others who are just starting their journey means so much. Watching Lucy fight so hard for the last year was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Running a marathon is easy compared to the battle millions have to endure through this horrible disease.'

Lucy says: 'My diagnosis completely floored me, you never expect it to be you. When they told me, I just remember feeling numb. No emotions until the nurse handed me this Box full of such thoughtful things that I might need in the coming months. And the flood gates opened - both myself and Louis cried with such mixed emotions and that moment will forever stay with me. A tiny bit of light and love in such a dark moment. And we knew that as soon as Louis said he was going to run the marathon, you guys were going to be the charity that we were going to give back to.'

Natalie says: 'There was no other charity I would have run the London Marathon for. Little Lifts has been so special to me since I received my box in 2022. So much thought and consideration goes into every Box. Cancer land can be very lonely. Receiving my Little Lifts Box made me feel so supported, I wanted to give back so that they can continue to support everyone in the UK affected by breast cancer.'

The most amazing day 🤩 On Saturday, we welcomed our runners to our third Trail Run, in the beautiful North Norfolk countryside with routes of 10k, 20k and 30k. We sold out again this year with over 400 registrations – incredible!

We want to say a huge thank you and well done to our runners (and their family and friends) for their efforts and incredible support. Filling the day with smiles, hugs, joy and loads of energy!

This event has so far raised over £24,000, but we’re still tallying the final total. You have blown us away with your amazing fundraising, which makes up £11,000 of this total 🎉

Here is wonderful Fiona, who received her Little Lifts Chemotherapy Box via our Little Kindness Fund in March 2025 🤗

Fiona was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2023. She received 12 weeks of chemotherapy, then radiotherapy and had her lymph nodes removed in February 2024.

'I took ill in August/ September 2024 only to be told the lymph nodes had found their way to my brain. My condition is not curable but treatable and have had radiotherapy, which has shrunk the lesions, and I am now back on chemotherapy twice a month.' - Fiona

Fiona is from Rothbury in Northumberland and she has worked for DEFRA in Carlisle for 34 years. Her favourite meal, after a good roast, is fish and chips. She enjoys going holiday and for weekends away, reading and puzzles - but her favourite passion is supporting Newcastle United!

What Fiona said about her Little Lifts Box:

"It made me feel happy, smiley and excited to see what was in the Box. I love it all, especially the lavender spray for my pillow. Just keep doing the good work you do to bring a little joy to cancer patients."

⭐ Fiona's top tip is: Stay positive, keep optimistic and never give up.
