Keeping Abreast is the UK’s specialist breast cancer reconstruction support charity. Founded in 2007 by two patients with lived experience, alongside a Breast Cancer Reconstruction Nurse Specialist, the charity was born from a shared understanding that people facing breast reconstruction need more than medical information. They also need support, understanding and to talk to others who truly know what they are going through.
Keeping Abreast also supports partners, family members, carers, and close friends who play an important role throughout the reconstruction journey.
The charity works closely with NHS breast care teams and other partners to complement clinical care and ensure that no one has to face their breast cancer reconstruction journey alone.

They provide free, trusted information, practical guidance and peer-to-peer support to those considering, undergoing or recovering from breast reconstruction following breast cancer, as well as those having risk-reducing surgery because of a hereditary breast cancer gene.
Through their support groups, one-to-one buddy support, helpline, closed Facebook group, online resources and practical advice, they aim to help people make informed decisions about their reconstruction as well as reducing isolation, facilitating mental well-being and boosting confidence.

Patients can access Keeping Abreast support in the way that feels most comfortable for them. Their friendly team can be contacted by phone, email or via social media, and their website provides information and resources to support people throughout their breast cancer reconstruction journey. In addition, their closed Facebook group (Keeping Abreast Online Support Group UK) offers a safe and welcoming space to connect with others who have been through reconstruction surgery and who understand what they are going through.

There are many different options when it comes to breast reconstruction, and choosing what is right for you can feel daunting.
At Keeping Abreast, they provide non-medical support to help you feel informed and supported while making your own decision.
“Take a look at our real-life post-reconstruction support videos, which showcase the results of different types of breast reconstruction surgery. Hearing directly from people about their experiences, recovery and results can provide reassurance and help you understand the different options available.”
“Contact Keeping Abreast to speak to someone who has experienced breast reconstruction themselves. Speaking to someone with lived experience can offer valuable insight, practical advice and peace of mind.”
“Our support groups are a welcoming place to meet others and ask questions. They include ‘Show & Tell’ sessions, where volunteers show their reconstruction results and talk openly about their experiences. Seeing real surgery results and hearing different perspectives can be a helpful part of exploring your own options.”
